European Program "Culture 2000"

Crossings: Movements of People and movement of cultures:
Changes in the Mediterranean from Ancient to Modern Times

The Pierides Foundation attained an important European distinction: The European Commission has approved the Foundation’s proposal for the ‘Culture 2000 Framework Programme’ entitled Crossings: Movements of People and movement of cultures: Changes in the Mediterranean from Ancient to Modern Times.

This is the first time that a Cypriot institution is the main organiser of such an international and multi-annual project. The Pierides Foundation will be the Leader of the project. The other co-organising countries are Greece, Malta, Italy and France.

Specifically:
- The Pierides Foundation (project leader)-Cyprus
- The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (co-organiser)-Malta
- The Instituto per le Tecnologie Specialiste ai Beni Culturali-Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche (co-organiser)-France
- The Foundation of the Hellenic World (co-organiser)-Greece

The Centre de Recherche en Arts, Images et Formes, Universite de Picardie Jules Verne (co-organiser)-France.
It should be stressed that the Pierides Foundation proposal went through a highly competitive process of evaluation. Only 17 projects were proposed by the European Commission to receive EU funding from the 25 Member States and 195 proposals in total.

‘Culture 2000’
The Culture 2000 programme contributes to the promotion of a cultural area common to the European peoples. In this context, it supports cooperation between creative artists, cultural operators between creative artists, cultural operators, private and public promoters, the activities of the cultural networks, and other partners as well as the cultural institutions of the Member State and of the other participant States. The main objectives of the Culture 2000 programme are a) the promotion of a cultural dialogue and of mutual knowledge of the culture and history of European peoples and b) the promotion of creativity and the transnational dissemination of culture and the movement of artists, creators and other cultural operators.

The theme of the project “Crossings: Movements of People and movement of cultures: Changes in the Mediterranean from Ancient to Modern Times” explores the issue of movement of cultures and people between Europe and the surrounding world, with special emphasis on the Mediterranean basin. In particular, it wishes to look at different forms of contact and interaction in the Mediterranean and to explore the role that those might have played to the formation of modern European society. Cultural diversity and common heritage are the two main axes of the project; ancient, medieval and modern are the three periods with which the project is concerned.

The project’s main objective is to demonstrate that mobility and interaction promote cultural diversity but also contribute to the development of new forms of cultural expression. In particular, the project aims to demonstrate to the wider public how elements of culture were transmitted from the East to the West and vice versa and what changes in material culture occur as a result of this interaction.
